The Music Challenge – Module 1, Day 3: Traffic & Competition
Today’s challenge is related to the two most important concepts of Internet Marketing: Traffic and Competition. We musicians rely mostly on traffic to get our music heard by people, because, obviously, the more people visit our website, the higher the chance is of getting heard. Traffic is associated with competition. Why? Well, because the keywords used to drive traffic to your website are available to everybody. This means that anybody can use them to drive traffic to their own website. There will be a natural competition for the top ten rankings in Google, which makes choosing the appropriate keywords a vital step in our marketing strategy.
In the video below, Dr. Anthony will be looking into:
- Understanding traffic estimates
- How web page rankings develop over time
- Why we use broad match traffic data
- Why we use phrase match competition data

So to reiterate Dr. Anthony’s key lesson today:
When you look at traffic, you look at broad match data, and when you look at competition, you look at phrase match data.
Action For The Day
If these concepts are still unclear, try watching the video again. Look at the difference in the competition numbers for various keyword phrases in Google by typing them with and without quotes. Try doing this with keywords you might have already come across during The Challenge.
For example, if my keywords were Music Business Plan and I type them without quotes into Google, I would see the following:
![]()
Whereas typing them with quotes “Music Business Plan”, I’d see the following:
![]()
Wohoo! 83,700,000 results as an indication for potential traffic and 8,230 results for competition data. Now isn’t that a cherry?
